Hayashi Yoko, Director of the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art, took part in planning the inaugural exhibition “Art in Japan Today: 1985–1995” in 1995 as a curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo. Meanwhile, Katoh Yoshio, then a gallerist, organized “13 Japanese Artists: Art of the 90s”, an exhibition that toured Italy and Germany, in 1993. This talk will look back on the art scene of the 1990s, consider differences between the perspectives of museums and galleries, and also address the current moment in the art world.

Hayashi Yoko
(Director, Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art)

Born in Kyoto Prefecture in 1965. Earned a doctorate from Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. After serving as a curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, a faculty member at the Kyoto University of Art and Design, and an arts researcher at the Agency for Cultural Affairs, she assumed her current position in April 2023. Major exhibitions she has curated include “Foujita / Kuniyoshi” (2025, Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art), the 18th through 25th editions of “DOMANI: The Art of Tomorrow” (2015–2023, The National Art Center, Tokyo, and other venues), “Foujita: A Retrospective — Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of His Death” (2018–2019, Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, and Maison de la culture du Japon à Paris), and “Morimura Yasumasa: Kūsō Bijutsukan” (1998, Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo and other venues).

Katoh Yoshio
(Director of APCA / Contemporary Art Planning KATOH YOSHIO OFFICE)

Born in Osaka Prefecture in 1954. After working as a graphic designer and gallerist, founded the Kato Yoshio Art Planning Office in 1997. In addition to organizing exhibitions, he has been active as a critic, writing for the Nikkei and Asahi newspapers. He has also served as a cultural affairs staff member for Osaka Prefecture and as the first director of the Takarazuka Arts Center. His other roles include producer of Osaka Art Kaleidoscope, curator of the αM Project, chief judge of the Gunma Biennale for Young Artists, advisor and juror for Aqua Metropolis Osaka, and selection committee member and curator for Arts Challenge, the Aichi Triennale’s regional outreach program. He currently serves as a board member of the Association for the Promotion of Contemporary Art in Japan, a visiting professor at Osaka University of Arts, and an adjunct instructor at Kobe University.
