Co-organized with Fukugan Gallery (Osaka), this special program illuminates the evolution and current state of the America-mura district (in Shinsaibashi, Osaka), a capital of Kansai street culture, through the lens of local liquor store Murata Saketen.

In the area between Shinsaibashi and Yotsubashi in Osaka, commonly known as America-mura, quirky shops selling vintage clothing, records, and other goods have lined the streets since around 1970. Among them, Murata Saketen, a liquor store founded in the postwar years and home to the neighborhood’s only standing bar, was a place where diverse customers from nearby companies and shops came together. Fukugan Gallery was established in 1998 by the granddaughter of the store’s founder, and is now located above the liquor store. All the tenants in the same building are unique businesses that occupied their spaces through connections with either the liquor store or Fukugan. For this occasion, a group of these tenants will come together for an event at Studio Partita.

Fukugan Gallery has presented the work of many Kansai-based contemporary artists, from the so-called “Zero Generation” of the 2000s to those active in the earlier years of the Kansai underground scene. Now that the owner has turned 50, this feels like a good moment for the tenants and people connected to them to look back on America-mura from a range of perspectives. So come have a drink and share your America-mura: whether you saw it from the inside or the outside, whether yours is the America-mura of today or the one you remember from years ago.
