Mitoma Keito has developed her works using expressive techniques, including photography, video, objects, and performance. The constituent elements of her works are not fixed, ranging from existing products and information to natural objects, drawings, and even the artist herself. Underlying her expressions, derived from these diverse elements, is a state where two opposing things coexist - such as “stillness and motion” or “subject and object.” This tense relationship is gently thrown off balance by a humorous and light-hearted manipulation, yet the surface meaning remains suspended, halting the viewer’s comprehension. When faced with her works, our unconscious perspectives about “artistry” or the “correct way to read” are gently shaken. She seeks to reexamine the very nature of “art” itself through the confusion and discomfort that arise when meaning is suspended, with a subtle irony.
